In the mid seventies he volunteered to be seconded to the Sultan of Oman's Armed Forces where he actively participated in the successful counter-insurgency campaign in the province of Dhofar. As a consequence and from his recent experience as the Defence Attaché to the United Arab Emirates, he is literate in Arabic and speaks the language fluently. In addition he has been attached to the Germany Army for two years as a student at their staff college in Hamburg.  He therefore fully understands the problems associated with learning and studying in a foreign language.  He is a Civil Service qualified German Interpreter.

With a background of three tours of duty with NATO Headquarters he is well placed to teach military English in a multinational context.  He was the operational planner at HQ Allied Command Europe Rapid Reaction Corps (HQ ARRC) for NATO’s first overseas peace-keeping mission to Bosnia and was instrumental in developing the UN peace-keeping doctrine from its inception.  He has been involved in counter-terrorism in conventional and intelligence gathering roles in the UK’s terrorist problem in Northern Ireland in both rural and urban environments.
